“W” is for Woodmason, Charles [born ca. 1720]. Clergyman. Born in England, he had settled in Prince William’s Parish by the 1750s where he was active in the local church. In 1765 he applied for the position of itinerant Anglican minister in St. Mark’s Parish in the backcountry. Since there was no bishop in the colonies, he had to travel to England to be ordained. As an English gentleman, initially, he had little sympathy or understanding of the diverse population he served. Over time, however, he became a supporter of the Regulator Movement and worked to improve the lot of the backcountry’s inhabitants. Charles Woodmason left the colony in 1773, eventually returning to England—where he published his Journal of C.W. Clerk, Itinerant Minister in South Carolina in which he vividly portrayed everyday life in the Carolina backcountry.
