“B” is for Blue Granite. State stone. South Carolina is famous for Winnsboro blue granite that was quarried for many years in Fairfield County. The stone is of light blue color and contains particles of mica, feldspar, and quartz. It is much prized in construction and decoration. It has been used in the construction of churches, houses, gravestones, and fence posts since the early 19th century. For many years it was known as “the silk of the trade” and was used in the construction of New York’s famous Flat-Iron Building, the old Charleston Post Office, and the great dry dock of the Charleston Navy Yard. In 1893 Fairfield granites won a medal and diploma at the World’s Columbian Exposition. In 1969, the General Assembly of South Carolina designated Blue Granite as the state’s official stone.
