“C” is for Chisolm, Julian John [1830-1903]. Physician. After graduating from the Medical College of South Carolina, Chisolm opened a practice in Charleston and later joined the faculty of the Medical College. He was in Europe in 1859 where he observed the treatment of soldiers wounded during the Austro-Italian War. Soon after returning home he wrote A Manual of Military Surgery based in part on his observations. The book was of major importance in the treatment of the wounded during the Civil War In 1868, the bleak professional prospects in post-war South Carolina led him to move to Baltimore where he joined the University of Maryland Medical School. He specialized in the study of the diseases of the eyes and ears and treated Helen Keller. Julian John Chisolm wrote hundred of influential medical papers and essays.
