“W” is for Woodrow, James [1828-1907]. Scientist, college president.. After graduating from college Woodrow became a professor at Oglethorpe University. He took a leave of absence to obtain a Ph.D. at Heidelberg. He returned to teaching at Oglethorpe, but also began studies that would lead to his being ordained a Presbyterian minister. During the Civil War he was chief of the Confederacy’s chemical laboratory in Columbia. In 1861 joined the faculty at Columbia Theological Seminary, a Presbyterian institution. For more than thirty years, he edited and published two denominational publications. In the 1880s, conservative Presbyterians attacked Woodrow for his stance on evolution and eventually succeeded in ousting him from the seminary. In addition to his position at the seminary James Woodrow also was a faculty member at the South Carolina College which he later served as president from 1891-1897.
