“S” is for Sheriff, Hilla [1903-1988]. Physician, public health official. Sheriff graduated from the College of Charleston and the Medical College of South Carolina. In 1929 she opened a pediatrics practice in Spartanburg. During the 1930s she served as deputy and later chief health officer for Spartanburg County. Her responses to endemic diphtheria, pellagra, and tuberculosis; her innovative maternal and child health campaigns; and her contraceptive research spawned programs throughout the South based on her models. In 1941 she became director of the state Board of Health’s Division of Maternal and Child Health. In 1967 she became deputy commissioner of the State Board of Health and chief of the Bureau of Community Health Services. Hilla Sheriff focused state resources on accident prevention, poison control, family planning, and the elimination of child abuse.
