  “W” is for Waring, Joseph Ioor [1897-1977]. Pediatrician. Medical historian. Upon completion of his education, Joseph Waring spent three years in Tennessee before returning to South Carolina and establishing a private practice in Charleston. He also became an assistant in the pediatrics department at the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, where he rose to the rank of clinical professor of pediatrics. He published numerous articles in state and national medical journals. He had a tremendous interest in history and by 1949 was the librarian for the Medical Society of South Carolina. Under his stewardship, the Society's collections were greatly expanded. In 1969, this valuable archive was named in his honor. Between 1964 and 1971 Joseph IoorWaring published a three volume History of Medicine in South Carolina, the first general and comprehensive history of medicine in the state.

Dr. Walter Edgar has two programs on South Carolina Public Radio: Walter Edgar's Journal, and South Carolina from A to Z. Dr. Edgar received his B.A. degree from Davidson College in 1965 and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1969. After two years in the army (including a tour of duty in Vietnam), he returned to USC as a post-doctoral fellow of the National Archives, assigned to the Papers of Henry Laurens.
