“R” is for Ramsay, David [1749-1815]. Physician. Legislator. Historian. A native of Pennsylvania, Ramsay moved to Charleston in 1773. Almost immediately he became involved in the cause of the American Revolution. Active in politics, he served in the General Assembly for twenty-three years. In 1789, Ramsay was one of the founders of the Medical Society of South Carolina. He is best known, however, as one of the nation's pioneer historians and during his lifetime achieved national and international recognition. His History of the American Revolution went through six American editions before 1865 and was also published in British, German, Irish, French, and Dutch editions. Among David Ramsay's other major works are the History of the Revolution in South Carolina [2 volumes] and the History of South Carolina from First Settlement in 1670 to 1808 [also 2 volumes].
