“B” is for Bartram, John [1699-1777] and Bartram, William [1739-1823]. Naturalists. John Bartram was a self-taught botanist. He became an influential figure in the international world of botanical exchange—sending plants, seeds, bulbs and cuttings of American plants to Europe. In 1762 and 1765 he mounted botanizing expeditions to South Carolina. In 1765 he was named the King’s Botanist. On his second trip to Carolina, his son William accompanied him. William was a gifted illustrator and is best known for his narrative of a series of expeditions in southeastern North America from 1772 to 1776: Travels Through North & South Carolina…. The book was extremely popular in England and Europe and went through several editions. John and William Bartram’s botanical expeditions in the southern colonies and subsequent publications are excellent examples of the cultural interchange of the Atlantic world.
