"D" is for DeBrahm, William Gerard [1718-1799]. Military engineer. surveyor, cartographer. After a successful career as a military engineer in the Bavarian army, DeBrahm resigned his commission and immigrated to Georgia. His talents were soon recognized there and in South Carolina. In 1752 he designed and constructed a series of new fortifications for Charleston, In 1757 he published “A Map of South Carolina and a Part of Georgia” which brought him fame on both sides of the Atlantic. He received a royal commission as surveyor general for the Southern District of North America. He later wrote The Atlantic Pilot, which included the first published map of the Gulf Stream. With the outbreak of the Revolution, he sided with the King and was imprisoned briefly in Charleston. Released, William Gerard DeBrahm sailed for England and never returned to South Carolina.
