"J" is for Johnson, William Bullein [1782-1862]. Clergyman. Educator. In 1804, after a conversion experience, the Baptist Church in Beaufort licensed Johnson to preach and he became pastor at the Euhaw Baptist Church. In 1809 he moved to Columbia and was instrumental in the founding of the city’s First Baptist Church. In 1814, Johnson served on the constitutional committee of the Triennial Convention--the first nationwide Baptist organization. In 1821 he helped found the South Carolina Baptist Convention and served as its president from 1825 to 1852. He was the principal of the Greenville Academy and a lifelong supporter of female education and an educated Baptist clergy. He was president of the Triennial Convention from 1841 to 1844. When the Baptist denomination split in 1845, William Bullein Johnson became the first president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
