"M" is for Moore, Andrew Charles (1866-1928)

"M" is for Moore, Andrew Charles (1866-1928). Biologist, educator, church leader. Moore graduated from South Carolina College in 1887 and then spent the next eleven years as a public school administrator in South Carolina and Alabama. He then began pursuing graduate studies in biology at the University of Chicago. Moore joined the faculty of his alma mater in 1900. When South Carolina College became the University of South Carolina in 1903, he became head of the newly created Department of Biology. He served for some years as the dean of the university and on two occasions as acting president. For twenty-six years he was a member of the Columbia Board of School Commissioners. A residence hall and garden on the university campus bear Andrew Charles Moore’s name, as does an elementary school in Columbia.
