"P" is for Post and Courier

South Carolina From A to Z
SC Public Radio

"P" is for Post and Courier (2010 circulation: 86,084 daily and 94,940 Sunday). Published in Charleston, the Post and Courier is the oldest daily newspaper in South Carolina. The publication’s lineage can be traced through three newspapers.  The Charleston Courier  (1803) and the Charleston Daily News (1865) merged in 1873 and became the News and Courier. The third newspaper, the Evening Post began publication in 1894. In 1926 the News and Courier bought the Evening Post and the two newspapers continued to be published separately for most of the twentieth century. Flagging circulation led the two newspapers to combine staffs in the 1980s. The papers formally merged in October 1991, as the Post and Courier, a morning newspaper. In 2015, The Post and Courier won the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Public Service Reporting.

Dr. Walter Edgar has two programs on South Carolina Public Radio: Walter Edgar's Journal, and South Carolina from A to Z.
