“L” is for LeConte, Joseph (1823-1901). Geologist, educator. A native of Georgia, LeConte was educated at the University of Georgia. He received his M.D. degree from the College of Physicians in New York. After teaching at Oglethorpe College and the University of Georgia, he joined the Faculty of the South Carolina College in 1856. In 1869, he moved to the University of California. LeConte published widely and was renowned for his work on geology and the theory of evolution—especially Elements of Geology and Evolution and Its Relation to Religious Thought. He was a founding member of the Sierra Cub. In 1875 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Joseph LeConte served as the president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1891) and of the Geological Society of America (1896).
