“S” is for Self, James Cuthbert (1876-1955)

“S” is for Self, James Cuthbert (1876-1955). Textile manufacturer, philanthropist. A native of the Bowles Mountain section of Edgefield County, Self worked as a country store clerk and a bookkeeper in the Bank of Greenwood. In 1908 Self became president of Greenwood Cotton Mill and turned a failing operation into a profitable one. By the end of the 1930s Greenwood Cotton Mill operated four mills and Self had become its sole owner. After World War II he continued expanding and in 1955 Greenwood Mills had more than six thousand employees. Self was known for his commitment to the community and created the private Self Foundation in 1942—providing grant to projects that improved the quality of life in Greenwood and South Carolina. In 1955 James Cuthbert Self received the national Horatio Alger Award.
