“H” is for Hoagland, Jimmie Lee (b. 1940). Journalist. A native of Rock Hill, Hoagland graduated from USC with a degree in journalism. In 1966 he joined the Washington Post as a metro editor. But, it is in international reporting and commentary that Hoagland has made his mark. In 1969 he was assigned as the Post’s correspondent in Africa. His coverage of apartheid in South African and his book South Africa: Civilizations in Conflict, were the basis for his first Pulitzer Prize in international reporting. Hoagland’s other assignments included the Middle East and Europe. In 1978 he became diplomatic correspondent on the Post’s national staff and in 1979 its foreign news editor. His second Pulitzer Prize—for distinguished commentary—was awarded in 1991. Jimmie Lee Hoagland was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2017.
