  • An Atlanta-area hospital system could take over the hospitals affiliated with Georgia's only public medical school under a deal announced Tuesday. Augusta University Health System says it has signed a letter of intent to join Marietta-based nonprofit Wellstar Health System. Spokespersons on Tuesday couldn't answer key questions, including how much Wellstar might pay to take over the hospitals. It would be part of a series of hospital mergers.
  • Atrium Health, the largest hospital system in North Carolina, says it recorded the $640 million loss on Medicare in 2019. But for the same year the hospital system claimed $82 million in profits from Medicare and an additional $37.2 million in profits from Medicare Advantage in a federally required financial document, according to a report released Oct. 25 by the North Carolina state treasurer’s office.
  • As rapidly intensifying storms and rising sea levels threaten coastal cities from Texas to the tip of Maine, Hurricane Ian has just demonstrated what researchers have warned: Hundreds of hospitals in the U.S. are not ready for climate change.Hurricane Ian forced at least 16 hospitals from central to southwestern Florida to evacuate patients after it made landfall near the city of Fort Myers on Sept. 28 as a deadly Category 4 storm. Some moved their patients before the storm while others ordered full or partial evacuations after the hurricane damaged their buildings or knocked out power and running water.
  • South Carolina senators have overwhelmingly voted to get rid of a requirement for hospitals and large medical centers to get permission from the state to build new facilities, make expansions or buy expensive equipment. The 35-6 vote Tuesday eliminates the Certificate Of Need program and sends the bill to the House. Supporters of the repeal say its an antiquated system not needed in the time of health care conglomerates. Opponents include the South Carolina Hospital Association. They say the program protects rural hospitals and can prevent hospitals from overspending because of competition.
