  • A lawyer for the family of a teenager found dead nearly eight years ago says a second autopsy of the exhumed body is complete. Attorney Eric Bland, who is representing the family of Stephen Smith, says this weekend was a "bittersweet" and "trying time." Stephen Smith was found dead on a lonely highway in July 2015. Investigators initially thought it was a hit-and-run, but authorities say no skid marks or vehicle debris was found near his body. Bland's law firm announced Monday a $35,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of anyone responsible.
  • A mother whose son was found dead in the middle of a South Carolina road eight years ago is opening a private investigation into his death after raising almost $90,000 amid the publicity surrounding the murder trial of Alex Murdaugh. The lawyers for Sandy Smith say there isn't any evidence linking Stephen Smith's death to the Murdaugh family. Investigators have remained tight-lipped about their reasons for taking over the case around the same time police said Murdaugh killed his wife and son. Stephen Smith was found dead on a lonely highway in July 2015. Investigators initially thought it was a hit-and-run, but authorities say no skid marks or vehicle debris was found near his body.

  • The U.S. Justice Department has announced a civil rights investigation into the treatment of people with mental illnesses by the state of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City and Oklahoma City police. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said Thursday that the investigation will focus on whether adults with mental illnesses are wrongly institutionalized in settings such as psychiatric treatment centers rather than community-based settings. The investigation comes as the Justice Department is conducting similar investigations in Missouri, Kentucky, South Carolina, Minneapolis and Phoenix.
  • A prominent South Carolina lawyer surrendered on Thursday to face insurance fraud and other charges in a failed plot to arrange his own death. Alex Murdaugh turned himself at the Hampton County jail ahead of a bond hearing. State police say Murdaugh tried to arrange his death Sept. 4 so his surviving son could collect a $10 million life insurance policy. The State Law Enforcement Division has now been asked to open six investigations involving the Murdaugh family, including the unsolved killings of Murdaugh's wife and son and now the previous death of their housekeeper.
  • State police have officially opened an investigation into missing money that a law firm says was taken by an attorney from a prominent South Carolina legal family whose wife and son were killed three months ago. Monday's announcement means that, along with the investigation into the deaths, the State Law Enforcement Division has four other ongoing investigations into Alex Murdaugh and his family.
  • A lawyer from a prominent South Carolina legal family who found his wife and son shot to death at their home three months ago and was injured when a bullet grazed his head as he changed a tire over the weekend says he is going to rehab. Alex Murdaugh's statement Monday also said he "made a lot of decisions that I truly regret" but did not go into details. Hours later, Murdaugh's law firm said he took money from the business. PMPED law firm says Murdaugh is no longer associated with them. Murdaugh's 52-year-old wife Maggie and 22-year-old son Paul were killed June 7. No arrests have been made.
