StoryCorps: Christmas on Daufuskie Island
StoryCorps is an oral history project based on the idea that the stories of everyday people are the most important and interesting of all. In 2012, the StoryCorps mobile booth came to Charleston. Here’s Dr. J. Herman Blake talking with his wife and co-researcher Dr. Emily Moore.
Herman Blake grew up in New York, but his father was born and raised in Johns Island, SC, making the Sea Islands an important part of his heritage. In his career as a sociologist, Dr. Blake researched Gullah Geechee communities, including Daufuskie Island, where in 1974 he took part in the local tradition of “Making Christmas.” Dr. Blake is the Executive Director of Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission.
