Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Some people flew halfway across the country recently to see the total eclipse; just like people came to central South Carolina a while back to view that celestial phenomenon. Residents of the Palmetto State won’t have to go too far to experience the emergence of maybe a billion periodic cicadas. You can look online to see what parts of our state, mainly the Piedmont, will be part of this event. Naturalist Austin Jenkins talked to us about cicadas and said we could witness two beautiful events of the natural world at Landsford Canal State Park through mid-May. The rocky shoals spider lilies, with their own fascinating life history, will be in bloom. Then just wander the hill into the hardwood forest and you’ll be in cicada country. Just follow your ears.
