Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. If you have a sunny area that needs a screen, look no further than our state flower, Carolina or yellow jessamine. It has no pest problems and grows like a weed!! You’ll need a sturdy fence, as it is such as strong grower that a puny little chicken wire fence will collapse in a year or two. But an ugly wire mesh fence like those around playgrounds or swimming pools can be transformed into a work of beauty pretty darn quick if you plant these vines about four feet apart. They aren’t picky once established, and you’ll want to prune them heavily after blooming to keep the vines in bounds and keep the seeds from spreading – this plant can become a nuisance coming up in your shrubbery and is hard to get rid of.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
