Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. I’d never looked up the song, “Listen to the Mockingbird,” before writing radio this week. Turns out, it’s a poignant tale written by Steve Forbert about someone whose beloved had died. At her funeral, the song goes,
Woke up one bright morning
Woke up in the rain
Woke up to the sunshine and the pain
Stood out in the rosebuds
Stood out in the dew
Stood out in the clear and got a clue
Listen to the mockingbird
Sing his sweet song
Listen to the mockingbird
And know that life goes on
More lyrics follow, but now, when I hear a mockingbird sing, even if it keeps me up all night, I will remind myself that the sadness that follows when someone whom we love dies, we will begin our journey back.
