Mosquito foggers can lead to resistance

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio
Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Agent Jackie Jordan was with us recently and talked about mosquito repelling plants --- which sadly are not effective. She warned against having your yard fogged – mosquitoes have generation after generation each season and these foggers can lead to resistance. And equally bad, they target all the good insects in your yard, too, and here we are facing pollinator decline. Nobody wants to be eaten alive by mosquitoes. I use Deet bug spray and wear long pants and long sleeves when working outside, what a pain. But when I went to see my brother, Billy Mac, he sent me home with mosquito traps, an idea Doug Tallamy of Bringing Nature Home, is promoting. Just look it up and see how Tallamy makes his. I show mine, same idea, somewhat different, on an upcoming show.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
