Yard foggers kill more than just mosquitoes

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio
Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Since 1970, we’ve lost three billion North American birds, and experienced declines in native bees, other beneficial insects, and our recycling decomposers. Lots of factors are to blame but pesticide use is a big one. One way to limit pesticide use is to avoid fogging yards to control mosquitoes, which only targets adult mosquitoes, not the larvae or eggs, but does kill other insects, good and bad. The larvae will continue hatching day by day. To target only the larvae, check out the mosquito buckets Doug Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home, is promoting. Cheap, easy, and super effective, just look up 'Tallamy mosquito buckets.' Some dark green or black spray paint makes them blend into your landscape.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
