Chasing Autumn: where and when to witness South Carolina's vibrant fall foliage

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio
Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. If you want to see beautiful fall leaves in South Carolina, you should head up above Highway 11. That’s our best slice of the mountains. But the Blue Ridge Parkway isn’t far away, and it has stunningly colorful sites. My family always goes to the Graveyard Fields in summer, but its deciduous trees are ablaze this time of year. There’s a website that gives weekly reports on places to see outstanding foliage – The 2025 Blue Ridge Fall Color Report. You’ll find out about things happening around that area, too, like grape stomping and farmers markets, where they might have some wine from those stomped-on grapes. Most trees have better color when certain environmental conditions are met. An exception is the sweetgum tree – always gorgeous.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
