A tasteful tabletop Christmas tree

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio
Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. When I was little, a million years ago now, my mother decided to have a so-called decorator Christmas tree. It only had weird white Styrofoam balls with red bows on them and white lights, and was a tabletop tree, to make things even worse. Although she didn’t repeat that to us kids, at least (awful choice!), she did only have white lights on our trees. I had a fancy friend and was telling her how tasteful we were with only white lights, and she clutched her breast and said, “You mean you had ELECTRIC lights on your trees??” When I grew up and had kids of my own, we had lights of every color in the rainbow we could find for our trees, including bubble lights—the more the merrier!

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
