An urban farm as MUSC

Making It Grow logo

At the Medical University of South Carolina the grounds crew strives to make the campus a stress relieving space not only for persons coming for appointments but also urban dwellers who are welcome to stroll the grounds. A good place to start is the Urban Farm with flowers for beauty but also fruits and vegetables, reminders that a healthy diet is a foundation for good health. At that site people casually interact with gardeners also participate in scheduled programs for certain patients, organized community groups who are working on staying limber and fit and even a program for selected youth who benefit from planning and working on a project to its completion. For those who can’t get down on their knees, raised beds and containers are integrated into the space so those with physical limitations enjoy the benefits of social interaction.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
