South Carolina from A to Z: “A” is for Adger, James (1777-1858). Merchant. Adger was born in Ireland and immigrated with his family to New York in 1794. He worked for a hardware firm that sent him to Charleston as its agent. He remained and became one of the wealthiest and influential merchants of antebellum Charleston. He entered business as a cotton broker but branched out into other enterprises. By 1850 he owned considerable real estate holding, including his own wharf. Adger used his position and wealth to good effect in the affairs of Charleston. He represented the city in the General Assembly, held a variety of municipal offices, and was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce. James Adger perhaps was best known for his success in establishing a packet steamship line between Charleston and New York in 1845-1846.
