“G” is for Gary, Frank Boyd (1860-1922)

“G” is for Gary, Frank Boyd (1860-1922). U.S. senator, jurist. A native if Abbeville District, Gary was educated at Cokesbury Conference School and Union College in New York. In 1882 he was admitted to the bar. He represented Abbeville County in the South Carolina House from 1890-1900 and served as Speaker (1896-1900). In 1903 he was appointed a special judge to preside over the murder trial of Lieutenant Governor James Tillman. Gary returned to the S.C. House in 1907 and in 1908 the General Assembly elected him to fill an unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. After completing his Senate tern in 1909, Gary briefly returned to private life before being reelected to the S.C. House. In 1912 Frank Boyd Gary was unanimously elected by the General Assembly as a judge of the state’s Eighth Judicial Circuit.
