“R” is for Richardson, Eudora Ramsay (1891-1973). Feminist, author, lecturer. A native of Kentucky, Richardson grew up in Charleston. She received bachelor’s degrees from Hollins College and the University of Richmond and an M.A. degree from Columbia University. After heading the English Department at Greenville Female College (1912-1914), Richardson embarked on a three-year speaking career as field director of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. During the 1920s she spoke frequently in South Carolina and became affiliated with the Southern Women’s Educational Alliance. She published a number of books including The Woman Speaker: A Handbook and Study Course on Public Speaking and The Influence of Men—Incurable. During the 1930s Eudora Ramsay Richardson settled in Virginia and served as director of the Federal Writers’ Project in Virginia and the state supervisor of the Virginia Writers’ Project.
