“G” is for Gonzales, William Elliott (1866-1937). Editor. Born in Charleston, Gonzales is best known as the editor of the State newspaper and was the youngest of the three Gonzales brothers to run the publication. In 1884 he joined the staff of the Charleston News and Courier as a reporter in Columbia. In 1892 he joined the staff of the State and worked as a proofreader, telegraph editor, headline writer, and feature writer. By 1900 the newspaper had become one of South Carolina’s most widely read papers and Gonzales was now news editor. In 1912 he was named United States minister to Cuba and by 1918 had become ambassador to Peru. In 1926, William Elliott Gonzales returned to Columbia and served as editor, publisher, and president of The State Company, which his family had founded.
