“R” is for Rogers, George Washington, Jr. (b. 1958). Football player. Born in Atlanta, Rogers grew up in Duluth, Georgia where he was a star football player. At the University of South Carolina, he would finish his career with twenty-seven 100-yard plus games. Rogers’ performance earned him the Heisman Trophy. The New Orleans Saints made him the top selection in the 1980 professional draft. In his first year he led the NFL in rushing and won “rookie of the Year. After four years with the Saints, he was traded to Washington where he earned a Super Bowl ring in his last year as a professional player. George Washington Rogers, Jr., was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
