Monkeypox is spreading in the United States with more than 4,000 confirmed cases—16 of which have been confirmed in South Carolina. Symptoms include: Headache; muscle aches and backache; swollen lymph nodes; chills; exhaustion; respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough); a rash that may be located on or near the genitals or anus but could also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth. The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing. The rash can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.

On this episode of the South Carolina Lede for August 2, 2022: Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Cunningham announces his running mate; reporting from the Wall Street Journal on ties between relatives of two prominent South Carolina politicians and a company set to profit from a new tribal casino as it sought federal approval; the latest on monkeypox and how at-risk South Carolinians can get vaccinated; and more.
