UPDATED, 4:40 p.m., May 31, 2022: A middle school boy shot by a fellow student died Thursday at PrismaHealth in Greenville, according to multiple reports.

Around 12:30 p.m., Tanglewood Middle School’s resource officer called in a report of a gunshot near the front of the building. Around 200 officers from city, county, state, and federal departments responded.

By the time officers found the shooter – a male teenager who was a student at the school – a fellow student was on the way to the hospital. No other details of the shooter were available either.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Hobart Lewis called the incident a trying situation for all school families, but praised the school and law enforcement for keeping the situation form becoming a worse problem.

"We conducted lockdown drills with the school district in the past several months and people question why," Lewis said. "Unfortunately we had to use that, but it worked seamlessly."

No other injuries were reported from the shooting.
