A significant storm system that has a history of producing tornadoes and severe weather across parts of the mid South is forecast to impact South Carolina on Sunday, with a heightened risk of severe weather.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of South Carolina under a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms starting early Sunday morning and lasting into the afternoon hours. Primary threats include damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

The likelihood of severe weather depends on conditions coming together early in the forecast. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to intensify Sunday morning, bringing wind gusts near 25-30 mph. Storms are likely start to diminish by evening, but heavy rainfall may cause brief localized flooding in some areas.

Tonight is a good opportunity to review emergency plans and assemble disaster kits. Make sure you have at least 2 ways to get emergency alerts. Battery operated weather radios are a great tool. Also make sure to enable Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on smartphones.
It is important to be prepared in the event warnings are issued for your locations. Areas of excessive runoff & heavy rainfall are likely, resulting in isolated areas of nuisance flooding as well. Dangerous storms will march east across the state by Sunday afternoon, with the worst weather expected in a swath that stretches from the mid-Atlantic to Florida. Tornadoes, damaging wind and hail are possible with any severe storms that develop in this zone.
A line of strong thunderstorms will push through the area Sunday morning and into the early afternoon. Some damaging wind gusts and few tornadoes are possible across the area. Some gusty winds outside of any storms are expected as well. #scwx #gawx pic.twitter.com/vJQkJqkikD
