Music superstar and Charleston native Darius Rucker is setting up a scholarship for nurses at the Medical University of South Carolina. It’s in honor of his late mother who worked at the hospital for many years.

“My mom poured her heart into nursing,” said Rucker. “It was more than a job. It was her calling.”

The Carolyn G. Rucker Nursing Scholarship Program will help nurses at MUSC’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital further their education, covering tuition, fees, and materials for academic programs.

“To know her legacy will live on by helping others pursue the same path of caring for children and families is one of the greatest gifts my siblings and I could imagine,” said Rucker.

Part of the proceeds from Rucker’s annual hometown festival this weekend in North Charleston will help fund the scholarship.

“The Carolyn G. Rucker Nursing Scholarship Program stands as a powerful tribute to a mother’s legacy,” said Mark Scheurer, chief of children’s and women’s services at MUSC.

This weekend's Riverfront Revival will feature several artists including Charleston favorite “Bill Murray &his blood brothers.” It will be held Oct. 10th and 11th at North Charleston’s Riverfront Park.
