Since July, there have been 16 confirmed cases of measles in the upstate—five new cases this week.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said she and the department anticipate more cases.
44 measles outbreaks have been reported in the country this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number is up from 16 in 2024.
The MMR vaccine safely provides life-long protection against the highly contagious virus for the majority of individuals vaccinated. State health officials urge the more people who are vaccinated will stop the outbreak and prevent long quarantines at home.
For more information on who needs to be vaccinated, visit the Center for Disease Control’s Measles Vaccination page or contact your healthcare provider. Immunization histories can be obtained from the SIMON public portal for those who received vaccinations in South Carolina.
As of Jan. 1, 2017, all immunization providers are to report all administered doses of vaccines to the state immunization registry. Doses given prior to that date may not be recorded in the registry.
Questions regarding personal immunization records should be directed to your primary healthcare provider or the provider who administered the vaccines.
