Nearly 4,000 South Carolina Department of Transportation employees are positioned across the state in preparation for potentially treacherous travel conditions throughout the weekend. The South Carolina National Guard also is activating personnel and readying equipment for immediate deployment.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and the South Carolina National Guard are proactively prepping for the potential of severe winter weather across the state this weekend. Winter Storm Fern has prompted a Winter Storm Watch for most of the Upstate and Midlands.

Nearly 4,000 SCDOT employees are positioned around the state and are ready to respond in the event of treacherous travel conditions.

SCDOT has stockpiled critical materials, including brine and calcium chloride, to help protect the state's roadways from ice and snow. The department also is equipped with 60,000 tons of salt and 1,200 pieces of equipment to ensure the safety and accessibility of roads and bridges, especially for first responders and other essential travel needs.

As Winter Storm Fern approaches, state transportation officials encourages motorists to stay informed, slow down, and give crews plenty of space to work. To stay up-to-date on the latest travel and road conditions, visit the SCDOT website.

Additionally, the State Guard also is activating active duty service members and readying equipment for immediate deployment following Governor Henry McMaster's state of emergency declaration Wednesday. Up to 14 Vehicle Recovery Teams and personnel are mobilizing to assist civilian authorities.
