A cannon ball found on North Myrtle Beach this weekend has been safely detonated by Horry County police.
Police say a couple combing the beach with a metal detector near 48th Avenue South found the cannon ball on Saturday. It’s believed to have been brought ashore while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged as part of a beach renourishment project completed last month.
Authorities confirmed the cannon ball was explosive and did contain a fuse. So, they detonated it at another location after warning people who live near Highway 90, they might hear a loud sound.
The discovery of cannon balls from the Civil War is not that uncommon along South Carolina’s coast. For instance, more than a dozen have been found on Folly Beach in the past decade, following hurricanes.
