The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, for the first time, will release Southern flounder into the state's estuaries.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) plans to release hatchery-grown Southern flounder into the state's estuaries for the first time this week, marking a historical milestone in marine conservation.

The release is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at the Murrells Inlet Boat Launch, 4139 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet.

The release will highlight four years of groundbreaking collaboration among SCDNR scientists, recreational anglers and state leaders who helped launch the first southern flounder stock enhancement program on the Atlantic Coast.

The effort underscores a science-based strategy to strengthen coastal fisheries and ensure the long-term sustainability of the species in South Carolina waters.
