West Ashely High School teacher Isabel Raisbeck is one of eight semi-finalists in the annual America's Favorite Teacher contest.

Charleston area teacher makes the semi-finals for America's Favorite Teacher contest.

A West Ashley teacher could soon be named America’s Favorite Teacher.

Isabel Raisbeck is one of eight semi-finalists in an annual, national competition that celebrates educators while raising money for various charities.

"This has truly been a blessing," said Raisbeck in an email.

The West Ashley High School social studies teacher credits her mom for nominating her.

In an online contest questionnaire, Raisbeck said she was always in trouble until a teacher encouraged her to join cross country. Then, another teacher inspired her to improve her grades.

“I became a teacher to try to do the same for students who are feeling angry, left behind, and hurt like I once was,” she said.

Raisbeck graduated from West Ashley High School in 2012 and now coaches its cross country team.

If she wins, Raisbeck will receive $25,000 in cash, a trip to Hawaii and a feature story in Reader’s Digest Magazine.

She says she’d use the money to pay down student loans and pay off her mother’s car.

Online voting to select the winner ends May 14th.
