The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration approved the new timeline to support a recreational data collection pilot program.

Saltwater anglers will have longer to fish for Atlantic red snapper when the season opens on July 1. The extended season, which will end Aug. 31, was approved by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support a new state-based recreational data collection pilot program.

South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida are participating in the regional effort to improve data collection on red snapper harvest and release activity through real-time reporting. NOAA's Exempted Fishing Permit gives the state Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) access to work with recreational anglers on the program.

To participate in the 2026 season, anglers must:

  • Possess a valid S.C. saltwater recreational fishing license
  • Obtain a free Red Snapper Harvest Permit through GoOutdoors South Carolina (available on or after June 16)
  • Report trip and harvest information using the VESL app
  • Have a descending device rigged and ready for use while fishing

The recreational harvest limit for the season is one fish per person per day with a minimum size limit of 20 inches total length. More information about permits, reporting requirements, and season details can be found on the SCDNR website.
