The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Dorchester.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said a deputy shot a burglary suspect early Thursday morning. According to investigators, deputies responded to an armed burglary just after midnight.

The person shot was taken to a local hospital but later died from their injuries. Their identity hasn't been released.

Dorchester County Sheriff Sam Richardson requested that SLED take over the lead investigative role, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in South Carolina. Sheriff Richardson is scheduled to hold a media briefing Thursday afternoon to provide further details.

This is the 21st officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year. In 2025, there were 45 officer involved shootings in South Carolina.
