SC's heat index soars. What you need to know

South Carolina ETV and Public Radio's Chief Meteorologist Tim Miller and Morning Edition Host Kristina Thacker discuss the dangerously high heat index.

Statewide, the heat index is reaching dangerously high levels. In some areas, it might feel like 115 degrees.

The heat index measures how it feels outside by combining the air temperature with the amount of humidity.

A high heat index increases the risk of heat-related illnesses. Outdoor workers, athletes, young children, older adults and people with chronic medical conditions are among those most vulnerable during extreme heat.
