The U.S. Marshals Service says Dan Hiers Jr., 53, has warrants for alleged murder and criminal sexual conduct with a minor. Those warrants come out of Goose Creek and Dorchester. Hiers's wife was murdered back in 2005.
According to the Marshals Service, that was the last time Hiers was seen.
Before the murder, Hiers worked at the Charleston Police Department. He was suspended after he was accused of sexual misconduct with a minor in 2004. North Charleston police officers arrested him shortly after.
But it was while Hiers was out on bond when prosecutors say he fled the country. He was added to the Marshals’ 15 Most Wanted list.
“Dan Hiers was in a position of public trust, but he betrayed that trust in the worst possible way,” said Gadyaces S. Serralta, director of the U.S. Marshal Service. “Placing him on our 15 Most Wanted list made his capture a priority for this agency. His return to South Carolina is both significant and rewarding, and we thank our domestic and international partners for their tireless persistence in bringing this fugitive to justice.”
The Hiers case was featured multiple times over the years on “America’s Most Wanted” and “The Hunt with John Walsh.”
He was arrested in Shanghai.
