Shoppers will be exempt from South Carolina’s 6% state sales tax on eligible back-to-school and everyday items

This weekend, shoppers in South Carolina will not be charged sales tax on school and some home items.

Unlike some states, South Carolina has no dollar limits or price caps on qualifying purchases. Eligible items purchased either in-store or online during the three-day window qualify for the tax exemption.

Tax-Free Items Include:

  • School & Office Supplies: Backpacks, binders, paper, pens, and assignment books.
  • Apparel & Footwear: Clothing, shoes, boots, sneakers, uniforms, and sleepwear.
  • Technology: Laptops, desktops, printers, and school-required computer software.
  • Home & Dorm Essentials: Sheets, blankets, towels, pillowcases, and shower curtains.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue reminds consumers that not all back-to-school items qualify for the tax waiver.

Taxable Items Include:

  • Eyewear (prescription or nonprescription)
  • Clothing and footwear rentals
  • Jewelry, watches, and wallets.
  • Furniture, mattresses, and household appliances.
  • Items for use in a trade or business.

Last year, South Carolinians saved more than $1.5 million in sales tax during the annual event. For a complete list of exempt and non-exempt items, visit the South Carolina Department of Revenue website at dor.sc.gov/tax-free-weekend
