The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office has terminated a second deputy following an internal audit into the misuse of Flock cameras.
Former Lieutenant Kevin Smalls was fired after investigators allegedly discovered 62 unauthorized searches using the department's Flock camera system over a six-month period. The internal audit claims Smalls used the surveillance network for personal reasons, including tracking vehicles belonging to his spouse and acquaintances.
Sheriff Buddy Hill has asked SLED to open a criminal investigation into potential misconduct.
Smalls is the second deputy fired from the Colleton County Sheriff's Office for Flock misuse. Lt. Ruben Carter was the first and was terminated Aug. 20 after an audit discovered thousands of unauthorized searches involving himself, fellow deputies, friends and former associates.
According to the sheriffs office, the audit found Carter conducted unauthorized searches involving 14 people over approximately one year, resulting in more than 2,700 instances of unauthorized use.
