Earthquakes happen without warning. Packing an emergency bag ahead of time will save time and ensure you have the essentials.

Start with nonperishable food, such as water and canned goods, to keep you hydrated and fueled. Include a first aid kit, necessary medications and personal hygiene items for basic needs.

Power outages can be expected after an earthquake, so pack a flashlight with extra batteries and a portable phone charger. Important documents, including identification, insurance information and emergency contacts on your person in a waterproof bag.

Pack extra clothing and tennis shoes in case there are more unexpected situations. Place all essentials in a bookbag or something easy to carry, check supplies regularly if you need to replace them.
