A public health notice has been issued after several dead geese and ducks were found in
Quarterman's Pond.

The City of North Charleston has issued a public health notice after officials say several dead geese and ducks were found in Quarterman's Pond. According to a post on North Charleston Government's Facebook page, Avian influenza, or bird flu, is suspected.

Seasonal bird migration is underway which can cause bird flu cases to rise. City officials say while the risk to dogs is considered low, the virus can affect other animals and sometimes humans. They encourage backyard poultry owners to be extra cautious.

To help prevent illness:

  • Avoid touching or handling dead or sick birds
  • Keep dogs and other pets away from deceased or visibly ill wildlife
  • Do not allow pets to eat dead birds or other wildlife
  • Monitor poultry for signs of illness and follow guidance from state health officials

North Charleston Government asks anyone who might come across dead or sick birds at Quarterman’s Pond to leave them alone and notify North Charleston Animal Control at 843-740-2815. The city says it will share any additional information as it becomes available.
