On Wednesday, the South Carolina Supreme Court denied a rehearing petition for death row inmate Steven Bixby. The move found Bixby is competent to be executed. A day later, his attorneys are asking for that execution to be pushed to 2027.

The motion specifically asks the court not to allow a death warrant to be issued during the winter holidays. It cites precedent in the execution of Marion Bowman, which was conducted in January of 2025.
The push comes after attorneys for Bixby exhausted efforts to get him taken off death row. They challenged his eligibility for the death penalty due to his mental state.
Bixby was convicted in 2007 for the killings of two Abbeville police officers during a 13-hour standoff in 2003.
