MUSC: making safe spaces
The Medical University of South Carolina administration is committed to making its grounds a part of its overall commitment to health care. Beautiful flowers and shrubbery abound across the campus. When COVID shut down many activities centered in the urban garden area, the staff started making flower arrangements and putting them out for medical professionals to pick up on their way to their workspaces. Eventually, as part of the goal of horticultural therapy, the grounds crew began collecting flowers, greenery, and grasses and letting people gather safely outdoors to make arrangements. On a recent visit, Making It Grow spoke to medical students, administrators, nurses, custodians and others all finding great joy in gathering, socializing and using the provided materials to create a take home or take to work collection of natural materials and memories of a stress free social get together.
